This website serves as a list of reviews of various bean and cheese tacos found in San Antonio, Texas. The bean and cheese taco is a truly wonderful creation. Three simple ingredients (four if you include salsa, which I do), make the bean and cheese taco the most ubiquitous taco in San Antonio. The ideal bean and cheese taco has a fresh flour tortilla filled with flavorful beans and melted cheese paired with spicy salsa.
A bean and cheese taco is in many ways similar to an italian dish, such as pasta aglia e olio, in that it contains a few simple ingredients but when crafted correctly these ingredients come together to create a meal much greater than the sum of its parts. This simplicity leaves little room for error. If you were to take a store bought tortilla, add warmed refried beans from a can, sprinkle on cheese, toss in the microwave, and serve with jarred salsa it would still be a bean and cheese taco. However, when you take a freshly made flour tortilla hot off the griddle, ladle on beans that were made that day, sprinkle in cheese that is then melted to perfection on a stovetop that still has some leftover grease on it, and serve with salsa made from peppers and tomatoes that were roasted and blended together the previous evening, you get a completely different creation. Furthermore, the bean and cheese taco serves as a canary in the mineshaft for the regular breakfast taqueria. If a restaurant can't crank out a delicous bean and cheese with one hand behind their back then you can bet their chilaquiles or barbacoa is lacking.
Disclaimer:These are my own personal opinions. Most of these reviews are based off of one taco from each establishment. If you think any of these reviews are wrong or if you have any places you think I should try hit up sabeanandcheese.net@gmail.com.
Further Disclaimer: In my opinion San Antonio is the mecca of breakfast tacos. Therefore, when I describe a taco as average, that is relative to other tacos available in San Antonio. This means that calling a bean and cheese average is not only not an insult but a compliment. I would choose the most average taco San Antonio has to offer over the best taco the state of Iowa has to offer.

My favorite nine favorite bean and cheeses at the moment (in no particular order). I would drive past other taquerias to get a bean and cheese from any one of these.
Petes Tako House
Price: $1.89
Overall Rating: 7/5
Fresh flakey tortilla, Flavorful and spicy verde salsa is my favorite verde salsa I've tried.
Marys Tacos
Price: $2.15
Overall Rating: 7/5
Awesome fresh fluffy tortilla, great beans and perfect meltage Also have a great potato and egg taco.
Losoyas
Price: $1.39
Overall Rating: 7/5
Some of the best beans I've had, super creamy with awesome melty white cheese. Highly recommend, very nice staff but if you are a gringo like me bring a friend who can speak spanish. My only complaint is that the taco was a little small. They also have one of the better huevo and nopal tacos I've had.
Original Donut Shop
Price: $1.79
Overall Rating: 7/5
Theres a reason the drive through for this establishment causes a traffic jam on Fredericksburg. Because they have wonderful breakfast tacos and good donuts. What else do you need? Excellent fresh tortilla, quality creamy beans, perfect amount of meltage with superb red salsa.
Con Huevos
Price: $1.50
Overall Rating: 7/5
Fresh flakey tortilla, creamy beans, nice meltage and four different but equally good salsa. Highly recommend their specialty breakfast tacos as well, only place I've found with soft scrambled eggs. Also has pretty dope aqua fresca.
Taqueria Datapoint #5
Price: $0.99
Overall Rating: 7/5
Wonderful taco with no weak points, taqeruia datapoint is definitely a household name for any San Antonian who enjoys tacos. This is for sure a step above your average spot.
Ruthies Mexican Restaurant
Price: $1.59
Overall Rating: 7/5
Super fresh tortilla, creamy and flavorful beans with great meltage and two quality salsas. This is what everything done right in a traditional san antonio bean and cheese taco looks like. Their chilaquiles verde taco might be the best chilaquiles taco I've ever had. Big shoutout to Polly and Shanti for the recommendation.
These are places that you wouldn't necessarily expect to serve quality bean and cheese tacos. Take a chance on one of these and you won't be disapointed.
Chas Market and Kitchen Korean BBQ
Price: $1.50
Overall Rating: 7/5
Yeah, thats correct, a korean market/all you can eat BBQ joint on the I-35 access road has some delightful breakfast tacos. Excellent fluffy and fresh tortilla, super creamy delicious beans with the pefect amount of melted cheese mixed in. Paired with a complex and spicey verde salsa.
Bill Millers
Price: $1.19
Overall Rating: 5/5
Who would have guessed that a BBQ and fried chicken joint would not only serve breakfast tacos, but good breakfast tacos? I was really pleasantly surprised by how good and (sizeable) their bean and cheese was. This might be a controversial opinion but I'd take a bill millers breakfast taco over taco cabana any day. There salsa was the only downside, it was palatable but certainly not spicy or interesting.
Tapatio Vegan Tacos
Price: $8.00 (Two tacos + jalapeno and onion)
Overall Rating: 6/5
This taco is not just great for being a vegan bean and cheese, its a great bean and cheese. If I hadn't known it was vegan I would never have guessed. At four dollars each its a little pricey. However, this is the only taco truck I've ever been to that makes their own "cheese" so its worth the extra cash. In addition to a wonderful taco they also have the best avocado based salsa I have ever had.
These are the worst bean and cheese tacos I've tried
Revolucion Coffee + Juice
Price: $3.00
Overall Rating: 1/5
I want to preface this review by saying that I enjoy the cold brew and smoothie bowls at Revolucion and I admire their mission of sustainability and health. With that being said, this is not sasmoothiebowl.net. Everything about this taco was bad. I really tried to keep an open mind when I initially saw the green tortilla but it tasted like it came straight from a bag, the opposite of fresh, it wasn’t even warmed up. I 100% support vegetarian beans in a bean and cheese and I think that black beans are underutilized, but these were not it. There were crunchy bits of overcooked beans mixed in and there was little bit of a wonky aftertaste. Crunch in a bean and cheese is unacceptable. As you can tell from the picture the cheese ratio was way off, but at least it was sufficiently melted. Red salsa was weak but the green was actually good. Too bad the plastic cup it came in only held enough for one bite. The $3.00 price tag here just added insult to injury. Advertising this as a bean and cheese taco in San Antonio is akin to selling cream-based Fettuccine Alfredo in Rome.
Taco Cabana
Price: $1.09
Overall Rating: 2/5
Exponentially worse than every (Thank you executive copy editor Matt Scoggins for catching my typo here) other place I've tried. With that being said, Salsa ranch is delicious. Are their margaritas still delicious for $2? Yes. Could I still demolish 6-10 of these in one sitting? Yes.
Anthony's Tex mex to go Website (Love the website design)
Price: $1.10
Overall Rating: 5/5
Good but inconsistent bean and cheese. However, the true star of anthonys is their burritos. Their chilaquiles burrito might be the best burrito I've ever had.
Price: $1.29
Overall Rating: 6/5
One of the best bean and cheese and tacos I've had recently. This had the perfect ratio of bean to cheese to tortilla. The only downside was the salsa which was subpar. This might be my favorite san antonio chain for bean and cheese. If you go on their throwback pricing days you can get tacos for $0.79
Price: $1.59
Overall Rating: 5/5
Very solid bean and cheese taco. Double wrapped with two tortillas which was an interesting twist. If you go to taco palenque, get a pirata, which is a bean and cheese taco with extra stuff.
Price: $1.09
Overall Rating: 2/5
This is by far the worst bean and cheese taco I have eaten in San Antonio. Are their margaritas still delicious for $2? Yes. Could I still demolish 6-10 of these in one sitting? Yes. The salsa ranch is pretty dank though.
Price: $1.39
Overall Rating: 7/5
Absolutely solid bean and cheese. Highly recommend, very nice staff but if you are a gringo like me bring a friend who can speak spanish. My only complaint is that the taco was a little small. They also have one of the better huevo and nopal tacos I've had.
Price: $1.29
Overall Rating: 5/5
Pretty solid for the price. A little small though. This is a better version of taco cabana
Price: $1.79
Overall Rating: 6/5
Tasty taco excellent and complex orange salsa, nice atmosphere, they also have excellent chips and salsa
Price: $2.15
Overall Rating: 7/5
One of the best bean and cheese tacos I've ever had. This is 100% worth the drive. To quote Boerne native Stephanie Elizabeth Crumrine (EIT): "You can taste the heritage in the tortillas"
Price: $0.99
Overall Rating: 5/5
I mean this in the most positive way possible but this might be the most average bean and cheese taco I've found so far.
Price: $2.09
Overall Rating: 4/5
This taco definitely errs on the side of tex moreso than mex. However, despites its differences from the standard bean and cheese found in San Antonio this was still delicious. The restaurant also had a really cool interior with very nice staff. Also check out their website its even cooler than this one.
Price: $2.15
Overall Rating: 6/5
The real star of the show here was the salsa. For some reason I have found very few restaurants that can serve up both a banging green salsa and a nice red salsa. This place can. Both had nice pepper and garlic flavor and had a healthy amount of spice.
Price: $1.79
Overall Rating: 5/5
Solid bean and cheese, good variety of salsa
Price: $0.99
Overall Rating: 7/5
Wonderful taco with no weak points, taqeruia datapoint is definitely a household name for an San Antonian who enjoys tacos. This is definitely a step above your average spot..

Excellent taco, salsa was awesome, tortilla was definitely the weak point
Mimis Barbacoa and Tamales Y Mas Website
Price: $2.00
Overall Rating: 6/5
Solid bean and cheese, also their chilaquiles taco might be the best I've had
Price: $1.19

This was surprisingly good, and significantly better than taco cabana, only thing lacking was the salsa
Price: ??
Overall Rating: 6/5
Quality taco with interesting salsa. Went here once when it was parked on Fredericksburg, never seen it since.
Price: $1.89

If someone from outside of san Antonio only had time for one bean and cheese I would recommend Petes.

This is the only city in the nation where you can a delicious breakfast taco with a fresh tortilla from a coffe shop. Mildfire has an excellent coldbrew
Price: $1.50
Overall Rating: 7/5
Excellent bean and cheese taco. Super fresh tortilla, beans had good flavor and texture, nice meltage on the cheese. Came with four different but equally good salsas. Highly recommend their speciality breakfast tacos, one of the only taquerias I've been to that has properly soft scrabmled eggs in their breakfast tacos.

Price: $1.50
Overall Rating: 5/5
Quality taco from a nice small spot.
Taqueria Chapala Jalisco Website
Price: $1.75
Overall Rating: 5/5
Good taco, definitely inconsistent though. About 70% of the time tacos from the drive-thru are great, 30% of the time they are not great.
Price: $1.30
Overall Rating: 6/5
Awesome tortilla, little too much American cheese for my liking though. I have a lot of nostalgia for this place, went here weekly for their morning taco deal in college.
Price: $1.15
Overall Rating: 5/5
Nice local place, fresh toritlla, surprisingly pleasant red salsa, but little heavy on american cheese.
Price: $1.79
Overall Rating: 5/5
Very average little heavy on american cheese, very fresh tortilla
Price: $2.25
Overall Rating: 4/5
Excellent beans, fresh tortilla, perfect meltage. Flavorful mild and zesty verde salsa, but the red salsa was bad. Absolutely no heat or smokiness, almost indistinguishable from a marinara sauce. I understand that when you're located in alamo heights you can't exactly push boundarries with spice but still
Price: $1.45
Overall Rating: 4/5
Very Average, tortilla was a little dissapointing.
Price: $5.00
Overall Rating: 4/5
This is the most expensive bean and cheese taco I have ever consumed with a whopping $5 price tag. This is 2.5 times pricier the next most expensive bean and cheese I've found and 5 times the price of most taquerias weekday morning special. This taco had a fresh doughy (in a good way) tortilla with practically no color. Great amount of meltage with pretty average beans. The salsa was acidic and tomatoey with no spice or pepper flavor but it wasnt bad, just different. Overall this taco exceeded my low expectations (considering its sold in the most expensive grocery store in the city), however my advice to anyone in the pearl area craving breakfast tacos is to stroll a mile down the riverwalk to Petes Tako House and get three tacos and some cardio for the same price.
Price: $2.00
Overall Rating: 6/5
Solid late night bean and cheese with perfect salsas. Hits monumentally different at 2:00am.
Taqueria Los Dos Laredo #5 Website

Price: $1.45
Overall Rating: 6/5
Awesome fresh tortilla, nice meltage, excellent creamy green salsa.
Price: $2.99

Solid bean and cheese, had a pretty good red and green salsa.
Price: $0.99
Overall Rating: 5/5
Good neighborhood spot, nice tortilla
Price: $1.69
Overall Rating: 6/5
This is one of those tacos that tastes a lot better than it looks. Excellent beans, average tortilla, meltage was decent. However the real star is the salsa. This is the best red salsa I have had in San Antonio. Spicy and smokey, you can taste that they used a variety of dried peppers in this sauce.
Price: $1.39
Overall Rating: 6/5
Wonderful taco from a quaint spot, good salsa, and superb meltage of cheese.
Price: $1.59
Overall Rating: 4/5
Pretty average taco, kind of surprised this restaurant is able to stay open with the other heavy hitters on McCullough (Taqueria Chapala Jalisco, Little taco factory, and El Regio Tacos)
Price: $4.00
Overall Rating: 6/5
This taco is not just great for being vegan bean and cheese, its a great bean and cheese. If I hadn't known it was vegan I would never have guessed. At four dollars each its a ilttle pricey. Price: $1.65
Overall Rating: 6/5
Excellent fluffy tortilla, nice ratio of cheese to beans and phenomenal salsa. Definitely a contendor for best verde salsa I've had.
Price: $1.95
Overall Rating: 4/5
Probably the most unique salsa I've had, orange and very spicy and flavorful. While I do recommend their breakfast sandwiches and chilaquiles, their bean and cheese is a little heavy on the american/fake cheese, with almost no meltage.
Price: $2.00, $1.00 on tuesdays
Overall Rating: 4/5
This may be the most unique bean and cheese taco I've tried. Warmed corn tortilla, flavorful chunky beans, and vegan cheese that is definitely vegan, but still brings a nice nutty flavor. Hash vegan eats is as equally unique as their bean and cheese, with a variety of non-alcoholic and CBD infused cocktails in addition to vegan food. I opted for a CBD kombucha from the tap which paired well with the bean and cheese. While this was definitely not a standard SA bean and cheese it was still tasty and at $1 on tuesdays is definitely a steal.
Price: $1.00
Overall Rating: 5/5
Solid bean and cheese, solid red salsa.

Price: $1.79
Overall Rating: 6/5
Really nice tortilla, quality verde salsa, and the first taco I've had that also came with raw pepper salsa that was also quite good. Despite being only open for to-go orders this place was still incredibly busy, which makes sense based on how good their bean and cheese is. Big shout out to fan of the site T for recommending this spot.
Price: $1.79

Molina's is a combination restaurant, gas station, and grocery store. For context this review was written during a blizzard that San Antonio. If you like me also have no power or water at your home, venture on down to Molinas where they are fully stocked on breakfast tacos, gasoline, and bud light michelada tall boys. This was a classic San Antonio taco and it’s comforting to know that even in such crazy times important services such as breakfast tacos are still available.
Price: $1.49
